Crowns in Menlo Park, CA

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. It’s often needed when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth or after a root canal treatment and much of the tooth structure has been compromised. The crown is cemented over the damaged tooth to protect it from further damage.

At Stanford Family Dental - Dr. Jamie Paychev DDS, we place dental crowns that are made from one of various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, resin, and gold. Our dentist can recommend the best material for your crown based on the location of the tooth and the amount of pressure the tooth will be under.

Types of Crowns

  • Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia dental crowns are an increasingly popular option due to their exceptional strength and durability. Made from a unique type of durable and virtually indestructible ceramic material, these crowns provide excellent resistance against chipping or cracking, making them ideal for patients with strong biting forces. The translucent nature of zirconia also allows for a more natural-looking appearance, as it closely resembles the color and texture of natural teeth.
  • Lithium Disilicate Crowns: Lithium Disilicate crowns, composed of lithium and silicon, are a type of dental crown fabricated from a glass-ceramic material. This innovative blend combines the softness of lithium, a silvery-white metal, with the hardness and brittleness of silicon, a crystalline solid. In conjunction with other crystal-like elements carefully selected by your dentist, these Lithium Disilicate crowns serve as durable caps or coverings for damaged or decayed teeth. By utilizing this advanced technology and material composition, dentists can provide patients with aesthetically pleasing restorations that exhibit excellent strength and resilience while seamlessly blending in with natural tooth coloration.
  • Feldspathic Crowns: Feldspathic crowns utilize traditional and standard porcelain material and offer a luminous quality that mimics the translucency of real teeth. The meticulous process involves custom layering of the porcelain to achieve a seamless blend with the surrounding teeth. These crowns can be attached directly to the natural tooth surface, allowing the underlying tooth color to shine through, or they can be layered over a pre-built core for added strength and durability.

With our diverse range of options – zirconia, lithium disilicate, and feldspathic crowns– we can provide you with personalized solutions tailored to your specific needs and preferences.

The Procedure for Dental Crowns

Our dentist in Menlo Park, CA, will first prepare the tooth by removing decay and then shaping it so the crown will fit correctly. An impression is taken of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth and then sent to a lab where the crown will be made. While waiting for your permanent crown to be made, a temporary one will be placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage. But once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary one is removed, and the permanent one is cemented.
